Mantua to Peschiera by bike: the Mincio cycle path
Forty-five mostly flat kilometres along the river, from the lakes of Mantua to the Venetian walls on Lake Garda. You set off among palaces and arrive with the lake in front of you — passing right by Beatilla.
There is a way to get from Mantua to Lake Garda that avoids the main road, asks for neither hurry nor training, and gives back more than it costs: the Mantua–Peschiera cycle path, about forty-five kilometres following the river Mincio from the city of the Gonzaga to the Venetian walls on the lake.
It is a ride, not a feat: the route is almost entirely flat, largely away from traffic, and splits into stages however you like. Slow riders take half a day full of stops; families can shorten it, stop halfway, turn back. The river keeps you company nearly all the way.
The route, in short
You leave Mantua with the city at your back: the lakes, the skyline of palaces, the countryside opening up almost at once. The first kilometres run between fields and embankments, the Mincio alongside and farm courtyards scattered about — this is the stretch that passes close to Marmirolo and the Bosco della Fontana, which is to say our home.
Around halfway the landscape changes: the morainic hills ripple the horizon and the road gains a few gentle rises. This is where the most famous detour of the whole route earns its keep: Borghetto sul Mincio, a hamlet of Valeggio, with its watermills and tables over the water — one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, perfect for the midday stop. In Valeggio, those who wish can try the tortellini that made the town famous.
The last kilometres roll down towards Peschiera del Garda: the Venetian walls, the canals, and the lake appearing all of a sudden. The arrival is the reward: a burst of light after half a day of countryside.
Setting off from Beatilla
Our farmhouse sits minutes from the track, on the Mantua side: you set off from the courtyard, find your rhythm among the fields, and within a handful of minutes you are on the route. We offer bike hire on request, and for early starters breakfast arrives at the door in its basket — you pedal better on a full stomach.
The return can follow the same route, perhaps stopping where on the way out you only slowed down: the path changes character in the two directions, and late afternoon along the Mincio is its finest hour.
